Rusatom Metal Tech LLC, a divisional integrator of the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in the
Metallurgy direction, took part in the IV Eurasian Orthopedic Forum in Kazan. The company
presented titanium implants for extra-cortical and intraosseous osteosynthesis, as well as tools
for their implantation.
The Eurasian Orthopedic Forum is the largest event in Eurasia in the field of orthopedics,
traumatology and related industries. The forum covered all aspects of the treatment of diseases of
the traumatological and orthopedic profile.
At the stand of Rusatom Metal Tech LLC, forum guests could get acquainted with samples of
medical products made of titanium: plates for extra-cortical osteosynthesis of small, medium and
large bone fragments, intramedullary pins for the treatment of distal, shaft, proximal fractures of
the humerus, femur and tibia, their components (cancellous and cortical screws, plugs, washers,
etc.) and the necessary surgical instruments for their installation, removal and replacement.
In 2023, Rusatom Metal Tech LLC established a subsidiary Rusatom Implantat LLC for the
production of titanium implants using the technologies of a leading foreign manufacturer and
supplier of implanted devices for osteosynthesis. These products will meet international quality
standards, and their product and dimension ranges will largely cover the need of domestic
medical institutions for implants.
All medical products will be made of titanium alloys produced by the Chepetsky Mechanical
Plant (JSC ChMZ, an enterprise of the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom), which intends to
significantly increase the production of titanium products in the next two years. ChMZ JSC is the
only Russian manufacturer providing the h6 quality grade of products
At the forum, the best traumatologists and orthopedists of Russia highly appreciated the quality
of titanium implants of Rusatom Metal Tech LLC and outlined the urgent need to produce
import-substituting titanium implants for the Russian market.
"The creation of such production is extremely important to ensure the biosafety of the country. In
particular, on May 19, the US Department of Commerce decided to add traumatic orthopedic
implants and endoprostheses to the sanctions list. There are private companies in the country that
manufacture titanium products, but we need a wide range of products with their high quality.
And most importantly, there should be such production volumes that will provide warehouses of
medical institutions with high-quality implants and allow patients not to wait for an operation for
even one extra minute. Only such major players as Rosatom can do this, which can design,
provide marketing, production, quality control, etc.," said Vadim Dubrov, Head of the
Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Disaster Medicine, Faculty of Fundamental
Medicine, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Chief Traumatologist-Orthopedist of the
Moscow Healthcare Department.
As part of the panel discussion "Problems of forced proactive import substitution: achievements
and challenges of the industry", representatives of Russian executive authorities, domestic
enterprises, distributors of medical products, doctors of leading clinics spoke to determine
further ways and rates of development of domestic traumatology and orthopedics.
"There is indeed a great technological reserve in the field of traumatology and orthopedics. In
many ways, this is the result of support provided by the state over the past few years. It is
important for our products to be recognizable, doctors shall know and understand they are
available on the market. And now we want doctors to get acquainted with new products that can
be produced by the Russian industry as part of professional development offered for about
70,000 doctors a year. The second important point is to connect the medical community to the
product development stage. This synergy between industry and the professional community is
now of serious importance," said Ekaterina Priezzheva, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade
of the Russian Federation.
The demand of the Russian market for titanium implants for osteosynthesis makes up hundreds
of thousands of products per year. Rusatom Metal Tech LLC will produce implanted devices for
extra-cortical and intramedullary osteosynthesis in an amount of at least 140 thousand units of
finished products per year, as well as the necessary surgical instruments for their installation, by
the end of 2024.
Rusatom Metal Tech LLC has extensive raw material and industrial base for the production of
medical devices at nuclear industry enterprises. Titanium semi-finished products and blanks
produced by the Chepetsky Mechanical Plant have been already used by domestic manufacturers
for the production of implanted devices for osteosynthesis, dental and hip implants. At the same
time, we are actively developing this area and implementing a project aimed at modernizing the
existing production of titanium rods for medical purposes and increasing productivity to 70 tons
per year by the end of 2025. Until recently, these semi-finished products have been imported by
our manufacturers from Germany, France, Switzerland, and China. The design process solutions
used in the production of medical rods will bring their cost to a competitive level," said Andrey
Andrianov, General Director of Rusatom Metal Tech LLC.
